About 15 miles from Edinburgh, Crichton Castle, belonged to Sir William Crichton who was Lord Chancellor
of Scotland in the 15th Century. The structure of the castle was developed over the next couple of hundred years until The Earl of Bothwell, Francis Stuart, built new living quarters and a grand dining room at the north side, featuring the distinctive Italianate decorative facade with supporting collonades which remains today.
